Ibrahim Mahama invites CATPC to exhibit at Fondation Cartier
22 October 2026 – 28 February 2027
On 22 October, The Harvest Season opens at Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain in Paris. Ibrahim Mahama has invited CATPC (Cercle d’Art des Travailleurs de Plantation Congolaise) to participate in the exhibition, alongside eight other artists and collectives with whom he has developed collaborations and exchanges over the years.
Ibrahim Mahama, The Harvest Season
In The Harvest Season, Mahama brings together artists and collectives whose practices are rooted in the histories of labour, colonialism and the movement of goods and materials. The exhibition also reflects his interest in the role art can play beyond the museum, particularly in creating opportunities for education, cultural exchange and community development.
The invitation builds on a longstanding relationship between Mahama and CATPC. In 2022, Mahama covered the White Cube in Lusanga, Democratic Republic of Congo, with jute sacks, a material closely associated with the global trade in agricultural commodities. That same year, he supported the establishment of the Luyalu School in Lusanga. CATPC's sculptures have also been exhibited at Mahama's Savannah Centre for Contemporary Art (SCCA) in Tamale, Ghana, as part of Dig Where You Stand, curated by Azu Nwagbogu. The collective also presented its work at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), together with kąrî’kạchä SEID’OU.

At Fondation Cartier, CATPC presents cocoa sculptures and embroideries of resistance fighters on jute canvases developed through its collaboration with Mahama. Both materials carry the history of plantation labour, but in the hands of CATPC they take on a different purpose. The collective uses the proceeds from its art to buy back and regenerate former plantation land in Lusanga. So far, CATPC has reclaimed approximately 400 hectares, gradually transforming land once used for extraction into a community-owned forest.
