A proud Congolese woman gazes into the distance as a palm tree grows from her belly, until tree and woman are almost one. For sculptor Athanas Kindendie, she embodies both the Congolese people forced into plantation labour and the land itself, drained by a palm monoculture that enriches distant landowners while exhausting the soil until neither can sustain life.
